Description

About Wegovy® Tablets

The wegovy pill is a once-daily prescription tablet containing semaglutide. It is licensed for weight management in adults alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. A prescriber must assess whether it is suitable for you before treatment can begin.

Wegovy tablets may be considered for adults with an initial BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27 to under 30 with at least one weight-related health condition. Meeting these criteria does not mean the medicine will be suitable for everyone. Your clinician will review your medical history, current medicines and individual circumstances as part of your consultation.

How does the wegovy pill work?

Semaglutide acts on areas of the brain involved in appetite. It can help you feel fuller, reduce hunger and eat less. Weight management treatment also includes changes to eating habits and physical activity; your clinician can discuss an approach that is appropriate for you.

How is Wegovy Pill taken?

If prescribed, Wegovy Pill is taken once a day. Treatment usually begins with a lower dose, which is increased gradually as directed by your prescriber. Do not change your dose without speaking to them.

The tablet should be swallowed whole with a sip of water after fasting for at least eight hours. You must then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking other oral medicines. These instructions matter because food and drink can affect how much semaglutide your body absorbs. Always follow the directions supplied with your prescription and read the patient information leaflet.

What should I know before treatment?

Like all medicines, Wegovy Pill can cause side effects. Common side effects include nausea, diarrhoea, constipation and vomiting. Tell your clinician about any health conditions or medicines you take so they can assess potential risks and interactions.

Your prescriber will decide whether the wegovy pill is an appropriate option following a clinical assessment. If it is prescribed, they will explain how to take it, what side effects to look out for and when your treatment should be reviewed.

Directions

  • Take one tablet once daily, every day at the same time
  • Take it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, before any food, drink, or other medication
  • Swallow the tablet whole with no more than 120 ml (half a cup) of plain water only
  • Do not crush, split, or chew the tablet
  • Wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything other than water, or taking any other oral medicines
  • Follow your prescriber’s dose schedule, which will gradually increase your dose over time to reduce the chance of side effects
  • If you miss a dose, skip it and take your next tablet the following morning as usual — do not take two doses on the same day

Side Effects

Like all medicines, Wegovy® tablets can cause side effects. Most are mild to moderate and tend to improve as your body adjusts to the medication, particularly during the dose-increase phase.

Common side effects include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation
  • Stomach pain or discomfort
  • Indigestion or heartburn
  • Reduced appetite
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness

Serious side effects — seek medical advice promptly if you experience:

  • Severe or persistent abdominal pain (which may indicate pancreatitis)
  • Symptoms of gallbladder problems such as pain in the upper right abdomen, fever, or jaundice
  • Signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the face, lips, or throat, difficulty breathing, or a rapid heartbeat
  • Changes in vision (which may indicate diabetic retinopathy complications)
  • Signs of low blood sugar if you are also taking insulin or sulfonylureas
  • Mood changes, depression, or thoughts of self-harm

This is not a full list of side effects. Read the patient information leaflet supplied with your medication and speak to your prescriber or pharmacist if you have any concerns.

Warnings

Wegovy® tablets are not suitable for everyone. Do not take this medication if you:

  • Have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2)
  • Are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding
  • Have a known allergy or serious hypersensitivity to semaglutide or any ingredient in the tablet

  • Have or have previously had pancreatitis
  • Have gallbladder or kidney problems
  • Have diabetic eye disease (retinopathy)
  • Have a history of depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts
  • Are taking other medicines, particularly insulin, sulfonylureas, or any other oral medications (timing of administration may be affected)

Wegovy® tablets are a prescription-only medicine and are only prescribed following a full clinical assessment. Always follow the guidance of your prescriber and read the patient information leaflet before use.
