Description

What is Betmiga MR?

Betmiga MR Tablets are a once-daily prescription medication used to treat symptoms of overactive bladder (OAB) in adults. These symptoms include a frequent and sudden urge to urinate, increased number of trips to the bathroom, urgency incontinence (inability to hold in urine), and waking at night to urinate (nocturia). The active ingredient in Betmiga is mirabegron, which belongs to a class of drugs called beta-3 adrenergic receptor agonists.

Unlike traditional antimuscarinic medications that block nerve signals in the bladder, Betmiga works by activating beta-3 receptors in the bladder wall. This action helps relax the detrusor muscle, increasing bladder capacity and reducing the number of involuntary contractions. As a result, patients can go longer between trips to the toilet and are less likely to experience leakage or urgent episodes.

One of the key benefits of Betmiga is that it offers effective bladder control without some of the side effects commonly associated with antimuscarinic drugs, such as dry mouth, blurred vision, or constipation. This makes it a useful alternative for people who have not tolerated older OAB treatments well or who are looking for a more comfortable long-term option.

The medication is formulated as a modified-release (MR) tablet, meaning it releases slowly throughout the day to provide consistent symptom relief. Patients usually take one tablet at the same time each day, with or without food. It’s important not to crush or chew the tablet, as this would interfere with the slow-release mechanism.

Betmiga is often prescribed as a first-line or maintenance treatment, depending on the patient’s medical history and how they respond to therapy. While some individuals may notice improvements in bladder control within a few days, it may take several weeks for the full therapeutic effect to become apparent.

Always follow your healthcare provider’s instructions when taking Betmiga. Regular monitoring may be needed to ensure the medicine is working well and not causing any unexpected side effects, particularly related to blood pressure or heart rate.

How should I take Betmiga?

  • Take one tablet once daily, with water.
  • Swallow whole—do not crush, split, or chew.
  • Can be taken with or without food.
  • Take at the same time each day for consistent results.
  • Do not exceed the prescribed dose unless directed by your doctor.

What are the possible side effects?

  • Common: increased heart rate, headache, urinary tract infections, nausea, constipation.
  • Less common: dry mouth, back pain, diarrhoea.
  • Rare but serious: severe hypertension, allergic reactions (swelling, rash, difficulty breathing).

Contact your doctor if you experience chest pain, palpitations, or signs of an allergic reaction.

What ingredients are in Betmiga?

  • Active ingredient: Mirabegron (as modified-release)
  • Other ingredients: Hypromellose, magnesium stearate, polyethylene oxide, ferric oxide yellow (coloring), and other excipients for modified-release action.

How should Betmiga be stored?

  • Store below 30°C in a dry place.
  • Keep tablets in the original packaging to protect from moisture and light.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack.
